The EDL [English Defence League] staged a very small static protest opposite Parliament on the 27th October 2012, after they were banned from marching through Walthamstow. Totally outnumbered by the press and even more by the police, they managed to make some noise both before and after their visits to the pub. Drinking for England they were, and not a full set of teeth amongst them.

TUC anti-austerity march London October 2012. Matthew Chattle News Photography London

© Matthew Chattle Photojournalism

The TUC organised march through central London took place on Saturday 20th of October. Over 100,000 people attended. It was big and apart from the trouble on Oxford Street [which I missed, as I went over to Russell Square to look at the Bloomsbury Festival], there was little trouble.
As some commentators have been saying these events are impressive but are they changing anything? People make their point but to whom? It was very lively and at the same time very calm, very English in fact.

Trafalgar Day 2012, Trafalgar Square London. Matthew Chattle News Photography London

It is Trafalgar Day and the Sea Cadets were on parade in Trafalgar Square to honour Lord Nelson and his victory at the battle of Trafalgar, I wonder how many young Londoners even know who the statue is at the top of that column?
Pictures on Alamy News for a couple of days and then as stock images on Alamy, here's my page Matthew Chattle Alamy

Royal Parks Half Marathon. London. Matthew Chattle Photography.

An alien Smurf invaded the Royal Parks Half Marathon today. It was seen joinging the runners at the start gate and seemed to join the race. Nell McAndrew and Ben Fogle started the race as London was bathed in lovely Autumn sunshine.
I hope the Smurf did well before they caught it and took it away for examination.

EDL march to Walthamstow Town Hall. Counter protest and police block their path. Matthew Chattle Photography

© Matthew Chattle Photojournalism

A very tense day in Walthamstow as the march neared the Town Hall, but was diverted away to avoid clashing with the counter demo. Tempers flared [as you'd expect], shirts had mysteriously disappeared and language deteriorated, shocking it was. Couldn't everyone have gone out for a stroll in the park and had an ice cream?

Two police officers take a keen interest in this lady walking her dog whilst dressed in a typical dog walking outfit, typical if that is you are also marching for Slutwalk London 2012.

Merchant Navy Day London 2012. Matthew Chattle Photography

I took some photographs at the Merchant Navy Day Parade in Trinity Square Gardens. A touching event to commemorate the loss of life on the many merchant and fishing boats lost during WW1 and WW2 and to the present day.

The Piccadilly Circus Circus event closed the roads as the area around Piccadilly Circus was transformed into a wonderful circus. Trapeze artists, jugglers, high wire artists and the lovely Hula Hoop girl above entertained the packed crowds all day.
