The Independent Living Fund protest outside Westminster Abbey last Saturday. Protesters managed to stage a 'Spot the Ball' competition using some of the (many) members of the police force.

iPhones and the death of Photography.

Great article in the Guardian. http://goo.gl/VxQGQC about the rapid advances in photographic technology, namely the iPhone (and other similar products presumably). It seems there are conflicting views on the influence and benefits/ drawbacks of these new ways of making images.
As a photographer I am also a bit confused by all of this. Photography used to be a more technical and difficult business. Simply getting a well exposed, focussed, processed and developed picture required quite a few and varied skills. Now, well let's face it, it is perfectly possible to produce a well exposed, focussed, processed etc picture, without the photographer having any skills whatsoever. I've seen it happen. So called 'photographers' can spend a £1000 or less and call themselves a 'photographer' and barely know what ISO is or does, have no clue about exposure and make a living.
iPhones simply introduce another level of skills redundancy.
Yes we're all photographers now.
And don't get me talking about something called instagram.

Nelson Mandela. The Struggle is My Life. Flowers for Madiba in London

Parts of London were very solemn with the passing of Nelson Mandela. These were flowers next to the bust of Mandela on London's Southbank.

Send in the Clowns, there ought to be clowns, don't worry, they're here....in Dalston, about 60 of them. The Joseph Grimaldi memorial service is held for the 67th year at the Holy Trinity Church in Dalston. Clowns, worshippers and photographers were out in force at this delightful event.

The Lions Part mummers perform their Twelfth Night celebrations on Bankside outside The Globe Theatre today, 6th January 2013. The Holly Man arrived by boat and Beelezebub, Father Christmas and various other characters performed songs and traditional wassailing. A great time was had by all. Wassail!

Slutwalk hit the streets of London yesterday,  a lively and also serious march from Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square to highlight the issues of rape and crimes against women. Women [and some men] and children of all ages attended.

The Ultimate Guitar Book, Dorling Kindersley. Matthew Chattle Photography

In what seems like a million years ago [twenty actually] when I was working for book packagers and publishers, I worked on the 'The Ultimate Guitar Book' published by Dorling Kindersley. I did about 80% of the photographs in the book and travelled all over the country photographing guitars of all shapes and sizes. I met a few rock legends along the way, John Entwistle [The Who], Steve Howe [Yes] and Ian Anderson [Jethro Tull] to name a few.

This was an unused section break, we did black and white shots but the publishers changed their minds and I re-shot close-ups of different guitars.

For each section there was an 'exploded' view of a guitar in bits, this was a beautiful hand made work of art.

It was World Pride, Gay Pride this weekend in London and well I think it was The Queen, she looked like she owned the place anyway....actually I don't think it was The Queen.

Diamond Jubilee. Republic Protesters Whitehall. Matthew Chattle Photography

The Diamond Jubilee was a four day patriotic feast of Union Jacks all across London. I was out shooting evryday as were many thousands of other photographers. Without really trying I found the Republic, anti-monarchy protesters on Whitehall and they wer wedged inbetween the may thousands of people out to try and get a glimpse of The Queen.

Not too sure if anyone was even interested in them. They were hoping for some reaction I imagine, but the ardent Royalists/monarchists and generally interested people crammed into the streets weren't really taking any notice. No-one really said anything, in fact it was all rather English and diffident. A quiet protest, a grumble or two and everyone had a good time, even the anti-monarchists.

I had a good time as well.

USC Trojans Marching Band in Trafalgar Square, London

Trafalgar Square, London was full of the USC Trojans, University of Southern California Marching Band and very good they were, the weather wasn't very Californian, but they put on a good show with their gruff voiced leader Dr. Arthur C. Bartner who directs thim with a good natured rod of iron.

A new'Banksy' has appeared in Wood Green, London. Showing a small boy making Union Jack bunting on a sowing machine, the art is on the wall of the local Poundland. It's probably worth a bit more than a pound..and increased the value of the Poundland store

Cutting Police by 20% is criminal. Police protest against budget cuts and march in London. Photography Matthew Chattle.

Millbank was awash with off duty police officers who just happened to all bump into each other and decided to take a walk through central London whilst wearing matching caps and carrying banners and t-shirts they happened to have prepared earlier. An amazing sight it was too. Very good natured and not a hint of trouble......
They were protesting about the proposed 20% budget cuts that are leading to confrontation with the government. They were not on strike as they're not allowed to do so. Cutting police by 20% is criminal

Saturday 12th May saw Occupy London converge on St Paul's. I caught up with them on Fetter Lane as police lines and Occupy protesters reached a critical point. Drums and whistles were going like crazy and tension and tempers were flaring. A lot of pushing and shoving as police attempted to hold back the crowd from going wherever they were eventually  going. The mood changed from good natured joshing and pushing to a split second later when tempers reached a pitch. Then batons were drawn and it certainly threatened to turn nasty. All pictures are on Alamy as stock now, I always upload to Alamy Live News and I cover as many events and news events in London as I can.
